Berufsschulen führen die theoretische Ausbildung im dualen System (Lehre) durch.
500.000 junge Menschen in Deutschland starten jedes Jahr eine duale Ausbildung. Sie dauert meistens 3 Jahre oder 3,5 Jahre. Es gibt ungefähr 350 verschiedene Ausbildungsberufe.
Vocational schools provide a theoretical training as part of the dual system of education (teaching). Every year, 500,000 young people in Germany start a dual education. It usually lasts 3 to 3.5 years. There are around 350 different occupations that require vocational training.

Der eine Ort ist in einem Betrieb. Hier lernt man praktisches Wissen für seinen Beruf.
One is in a company, where students learn practical knowledge for their future occupation.
Der andere Ort ist in einer Berufsschule. Hier kann man in der Klasse lernen.
The other is in a vocational school, where students learn in a classroom context.
SchülerInnen lernen zum Beispiel drei oder vier Tage pro Woche in einem Betrieb und an ein bis zwei Tagen in der Berufsschule.
For example, students learn on-the-job in a company on three to four days a week and have lessons in the vocational school on one to two days.
Um eine duale Ausbildung zu machen braucht man einen Ausbildungs-Platz. Das ist eine Lehrstelle bei einem Betrieb.
To complete a dual education, students need a training position. This is an apprenticeship in a company.

How do you find an apprenticeship?
Man bewirbt sich bei einem Betrieb. Am besten macht man vorher ein Praktikum. So lernt man den Beruf besser kennen.
You apply to a company. Ideally, you do an internship beforehand to find out more about the occupation.
Nach der Ausbildung
After training
Am Ende der Ausbildung macht man eine Prüfung. Dann bekommt man einen Abschluss.
After training, you sit an examination resulting in a qualification.
Nach der Ausbildung ist man eine Fachkraft. Man kann sich dann weiterbilden und mehr Verantwortung übernehmen. Man kann zum Beispiel MeisterIn werden, einen eigenen Betrieb eröffnen und selber junge Menschen unterrichten.
After completing a vocational training, you are a skilled worker. You can continue your training and take on more responsibility. For example, you can become a master craftsperson which allows you to start up your own business and teach young people yourself.
Schulische Ausbildung
School-based training
Manche Ausbildungen im sozialen Bereich finden ebenfalls an zwei Orten statt. In der Berufsfachschule (BFS) lernt man in der Klasse theoretisches Wissen.
Some vocational training courses in the social sector also take place at two locations. At the full-time vocational school, theoretical knowledge is taught in class.
In einer sozialen Einrichtung lernt man praktisches Wissen für den Beruf.
At a social facility, students learn practical knowledge for their future occupation.
Auch für die schulische Ausbildung ist meist ein Ausbildungsvertrag mit einer sozialen Einrichtung notwendig. Berufe in der schulischen Ausbildung sind zum Beispiel:
A training contract with a social facility is usually also required for school-based training. Jobs with school-based training include:
– Krankenpflegehilfe / Auxiliary nurse
– Kinderpflegehilfe / Childcare assistant
– Alltagsbetreuung / Everyday domestic care
– Pflegefachfrau/-mann (Ausnahme: Voraussetzung mittlerer Bildungsabschluss) / Nurse (Exception: intermediate secondary school leaving certificate required)

In einigen Ausbildungsberufen benötigen Jugendliche einen Vorvertrag oder eine schriftliche Ausbildungsplatzzusage eines Ausbildungsbetriebs.
In some occupations that require vocational training, young people need a preliminary contract or a written confirmation of an apprenticeship position from a training organisation.
Das heisst: Damit bestätigt der Betrieb den Ausbildungsplatz ab dem zweiten Lehrjahr. Das erste Lehrjahr ist eine 1-jährige schulische Vollzeitausbildung.
In other words, the company confirms that the student has an apprenticeship position from the second year of the course. The first year is spent full-time in school.
